  • Interpret and apply the Australian regulatory, standards and compliance requirements that govern battery energy storage systems, including AS/NZS 5139, AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 4777, workplace health and safety obligations, accreditation requirements and network connection approvals.
  • Identify battery chemistries, hazards and failure modes and assess the risks associated with electrical hazards, arc flash, thermal runaway, toxic fumes, explosive gases, chemical exposure and mechanical damage.
  • Apply safe handling, transport and storage practices for battery systems, including manual handling techniques, dangerous goods transport requirements, storage controls, PPE selection, isolation procedures and the management of damaged or compromised batteries.
  • Install battery energy storage systems safely and compliantly by assessing suitable locations, implementing fire separation and ventilation controls, applying isolation and protection requirements, and completing required signage, labelling and pre-energisation compliance checks.
  • Commission, maintain, troubleshoot and respond to battery system incidents by following verification and commissioning procedures, conducting routine inspections, implementing emergency response and shutdown procedures, and managing battery decommissioning, transport and end-of-life disposal.

About this training

In collaboration with Glen Morris of Smart Energy Lab Services, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the safe handling, installation and management of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in accordance with Australian standards and industry best practice.

Learners will explore the regulatory framework governing battery systems, common battery chemistries, hazards, failure modes and thermal runaway, before developing the knowledge required to safely handle, transport and store batteries. The course also covers installation safety and compliance requirements, including system siting, fire separation, ventilation, isolation, signage and pre-energisation checks. Finally, learners will gain practical skills in commissioning, maintenance, fault identification, emergency response, shutdown procedures, decommissioning and disposal.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify and manage battery-related risks, apply safe work practices, and support the safe installation, operation and end-of-life management of battery systems in residential and commercial environments.
